Christmas at Red Butte: And Other Short Holiday Stories

by L. M. Montgomery

Most of us remember Lucy Maud Montgomery as the author of Anne of Green Gables, the classic children’s novel about a young redheaded orphan girl named Anne Shirley who comes to live on Prince Edward Island in Canada. Here is a giant-sized collection of her Christmas short stories – plus a bonus Christmas-themed novella, The Abbot’s Ghost – 16 tales in all. These nostalgic holiday stories will take you back to a simpler time when children still believed in Santa. Included is spectacular gallery of more than one hundred vintage Christmas cards picturing Victorian winter scenes, Santa Claus, snowmen, Christmas trees, and all things that befit the season.

About the Author

In terms of sales, Montgomery was the most successful Canadian author of all time. However, because her books were seen as children’s stories and women’s stories, she was often dismissed by critics.
Nonetheless, Montgomery was the first female in Canada to be named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. And, in 1935, she was honored by King George V by being invested an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Mark Twain opined that Montgomery’s Anne was “the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice.”
Although Montgomery “never felt she achieved her one ‘great’ book, Anne of Green Gables became a success worldwide. And the novel was ranked number nine among all-time best children novel’s in a survey published by School Library Journal.
